Christine Lethlan “Making Art with Textiles”
A little introduction to Christine;
Like many women of my era I was introduced to sewing at a young age and have developed my knowledge, skills and techniques over many years.
I have also had the privilege to be a student with many national and international textile artists whom have both inspired me and guided me to develop my own style using the methods and expertise they have shared. I now practice as a textile artist, designer and teacher and also manage a working studio overlooking the historic village of Clunes, in rural Victoria, Australia.
My inspiration comes from a variety of sources including my garden, geographical position and also a natural tendency to find beauty in the discarded and unloved. I love history and storylines and prefer to create pieces that have a narrative that is meaningful to me. I grew up on a farm in the Eastern wheatbelt of Western Australia and to this day my memories of home and life on the land have a significant influence in my creative work. Strong accent colours, tactile textures and all things to do with stitching have long captivated my interest in the visual arts.
With an active imagination, the patience to experiment and intuition to follow my ideas I have forged a style of working that almost by accident has given me a creative niche that suits both my philosophy ‘on life’ and aesthetic leanings.
I had the pleasure of meeting Christine in Clunes earlier this year. I have been admiring her work for some time now. Christine is a wonderful teacher and I am so excited to have her come to the West to share this beautiful technique.
